Things To Do – May 2008

Build a backyard tepee

You will need

  • 4 poles, 6-7 ft long
  • A couple of old bedsheets
  • Rope
  • Needle and strong thread
  • Plastic sheet or strong dustbinliners
  • 1 grown up to supervise

Method

  1. Find a nice, flat area in the garden.
  2. Stand the poles in a square at least 6ft apart, with the tops joining in the middle, and tie them together.
  3. Wrap the sheets tightly around the poles.
  4. Secure the sheets to the poles using tape,
    staples or drawing pins.
  5. Cut a 3ft high slit on one side to make the entrance
(Get a grown up to do this bit!)
  6. Lay the plastic sheet or binliners on the tepee floor to
    stop the damp.
  7. Lay an extra sheet or blanket over the plastic to make it cosy.
  8. You're all set for your big overnight adventure!

Tip: If Mum doesn't need the sheets any more, why not use marker pens to decorate the sheets with patterns and pictures of animals and plants - just like the real thing!
